812 event new 2007 Nov anonymous web 2007 Nov dgl 5 5 Users hanging on an IRC network after closin' window. edit
I'm havin' a problem since weeks ago. When the users who are connected to my CGI Chat close their web browsers or something like that, they get still connected on the channel and on the IRC network. They just hang in there. Is there any way to solve that problem? I would like that when my users disconnect from the CGI chat or simply close their web browsers, they won't get still connected on my IRC network. I'd really really appreciate a soon response regardin' to my request. Have a pretty good one. Take care of yourself. Bye.

Best regards, Ivan Lizarraga.

356 event new 2007 Jun anonymous web 2007 Jun dgl 1 2 No Streaming, the error when nothing shows up until i type /quit edit
I am reading this page ¤http://cvs.cgiirc.org/wiki?p=StreamProblems Trying to figure out how to fix this problem. Unfortunately, nothing on this page makes any sense :(

First it says: "The main script is a nph (non-parsed header) script, some web servers (notably Cobalt Raqs, older versions of lighttpd and early versions of Apache 2) don't support these, however this is easily worked around, simply rename nph-irc.cgi to something like main.cgi and update script_nph in cgiirc.config."

Okay, I entertained this. But all this says to do is rename nph-irc.cgi to main.cgi, then replace what already said nph-irc.cgi with main.cgi in the config. Is this seriously telling me to rename the file to fix the problem? If so, why was the file improperly named to begin with? I don't understand this solution at all, unless it is improperly worded. Please advise. Following the directions as written provided no improvement, as expected.

"To exclude CGI:IRC from mod_gzip use:

  mod_gzip_item_exclude file nph-.*\.cgi$
"

Okay, Great! Another option. Use? How? Where? do I type that in nph-irc.cgi? Do I create a new file for this? Where do I type this?

Thanks!

344 event new 2007 May anonymous irc 2007 May anonymous 4 4 renaming cgi to pl edit
Hi!

I'm hosting cgiirc on strato webspace. When i open the irc.cgi, the browser shows me the content of the irc.cgi as plain text. (Maybe the provider doesn't parse cgi-files) By renaming the cgi files to .pl and changing the filenames in the cgiirc.config, the login form and after that also the chat window loads without problems. The client also enters the chatroom (i'm seeing this on another computer) but doesn't load the nicks in the browser. When i try to chat, it says "Not connected to IRC!". I think the problems are caused by the renaming. Is it very complex (or even possible?) to convert the whole script so that is it working with the renamed pl files?

Thank you for your effort, with kind regards, Robin Schultz

PS: And sorry for my bad english!

Chmod 755 ‘/usr/local/sbin/identd.pl’;

Put the line ‘ident stream tcp nowait nobody /usr/local/sbin/identd.pl’ in ‘/etc/inetd.conf’;

Did the command ‘killall –HUP inetd.

Do I have to do something else? It’s not working. :(

213 code new 2007 Jan anonymous   2007 Jan   4 3 Bug while handling mirc colors edit
There is a bug with mirc-like colors handling. When there is a background color used, if you use another control code without background color, the background color will be reset. This is not the intended behaviour. Even if I input it into cgiirc, like "%C04,02 bla bla %C00 bla bla", into my client it will work, but into cgiirc, there is an error, the background is still reset.
2007-Jan-05 03:03:53 by anonymous:
Hi, I modified 2 lines from "sub format_colourhtml" to help preventing the bug.
   return format_remove($line) if $config->{removecolour};

my $bg = 99; # SamuelDr
   if($line =~ /[\002\003\017\022\037]/) {
      $line=~ s/\003(\d{1,2})(\,(\d{1,2})|)([^\003\017]*|.*?$)/
         my $me = "<font ";
         my $fg = sprintf("%0.2d",$1);
#         my $bg = (defined $3 && length $3) ? sprintf("%0.2d",$3) : ''; # CGIIRC originale
         $bg = (defined $3 && length $3) ? sprintf("%0.2d",$3) : $bg; # SamuelDr

         if(length $bg) {
            $me .= "style=\"background: ".$format->{$bg}."\" "
         }

I'm the one who originally posted the bug, (SamuelDr) My new method almost works, but still has a bug. When "ctrl-o" (\017) is used, the background color won't be reset at the next use of a "ctrl-k" (\004). As I'm not a perl wiz, I let this to you, the coders, to finally correct the bug. All my modifications ar commented with my nick.

Thanks!

170 new new 2006 Jul anonymous   2006 Oct dgl 3 3 Making irc:// links clickable as well edit
Popular IRC clients like mIRC, HydraIRC and XChat have added support for irc:// links. Clicking on one of those links will fire up their irc client and connect to the specified network/server and channel. Format of irc:// links is like this: irc://<server>/<channel without prefixed #>.

The added patch makes a tiny change in nph-irc.cgi to support these kind of urls.

2006-Jul-24 20:16:45 by dgl:
It would be cool if CGI:IRC could figure out it was on the same server as specified in the link and just join the channel if it is. (I'm not really sure how useful getting people using CGI:IRC to open another IRC client is..)

2006-Jul-25 11:58:42 by anonymous:
Well, some people join a cgi chat and want to figure out how to find the chat with the irc client. Most IRC Clients now support the irc:// link structure. About how to figure out if the servername is in the same network ? Well, you could do a regexp match on the domainname.tld if default_server has a host specified and not an ip.

Also clickable channels like #test is good idea

2006-Oct-15 11:27:59 by anonymous:
For that I suggest to make links starting with # or & clickable to make it join the channel.

It will also disconnect when the channel is idle for 5 or so minutes saying "CGI:IRC: Ping timeout"

I have tried the following:

- Disabling Mod_securiy
- Changing the path of the socket file
- Ensuring the correct permissions exist
- Contacting the web host to ensure they have no system issues
- Using the latest version of CGIIRC.

The web host says they drop outgoing/incomming UDP packets, could this be related?

Why not just set CGIIRC up to use HTTPS and have it on the same box as the IRCd? It elimates the need for SSL within CGIIRC.

No, because I need SSL connection between cgiirc and irc server, not between client and cgiirc. Note that cgiirc and client are not the same machine.

You could configure CGI:IRC to connect to an stunnel instance on localhost then.

It's not that easy because I used raw socket stuff (there wasn't an easy way to get IPv6 support any other way at the time). If it used IO::Socket it would simply be a matter of using IO::Socket::SSL in the right place instead.

What webserver are you using? Did you set +CGIEXEC on your options if using apache for that directory? It's a configuration issue with your webserver where you don't have that directory specified to allow CGI applications to run. You also should go through and set the default page as irc.cgi

on cgiirc main window.

Can you help me?

You need to make sure that the format file is in UTF8. (e.g. use iconv -f latin1 -t utf8 to convert it).

Currently smileys are hardcoded into nph-irc.cgi. However, should people add more smileys to the system, the changes are lost during update. A solution would be to move them out of nph-irc.cgi into a separate file that gets read. Example format: <textversion> <location of imageversion to use>

168 event new 2006 Jul anonymous core 2006 Jul dgl 2 3 Error: Communication socket already exists edit
Hello, dgl! First, thanks for your really unique project, you're doing a really great work.

I'm frequently getting errors on connecting to server with message "Error: Communication socket already exists" and after that all stops. Sometimes it says "Error: Mkdir failed". Also there's A LOT of temp directories in /tmp/ with name cgiirc-*. If I remove them then some time all works ok, but a few days later all errors came back :(. I understand that there are kept kinda sessions about open sockets, the question is should cgiirc delete them by itself or should I just place in cron something like 'rm -rf /tmp/cgiirc-*'? Is it safe? Is the bug in them?

Some info: gentoo ~ # uname -a

Linux gentoo 2.6.15-gentoo-r1 #1 SMP Tue Apr 11 12:56:03 UZT 2006 i686 Pentium III (Coppermine) GNU/Linux

i get this error in the error logs after a while using CGI:IRC. i would say this happens because the Memory allocation limit like my plesk told me: Cannot allocate memory: couldn't spawn child process: /var/www/vhosts/dbsyndicate.net/cgi-bin/sondachat/irc.cgi, referer: ¤http://www.dbsyndicate.net/cgi-bin/sondachat/irc.cgi

is it normal that cgi:irc uses so much memory? there were only 4 people in my chat room via cgi:irc. i could understand if there were > 50 users. maybe someone could point me in the right direction to solve the problem if its normal.

thanks in advance

There are several installing problems installing cgiirc on a windows machine:

1) you have to fix socket_prefix to C:\Temp or similar (UNIX path system)

2) you have to comment out line " #error("Error opening socket: $error") unless ref $socket;" in load_socket() in nph-irc.cgi

3) sending to a channel/doing commands doesn't work; edit field is empty afterwards, but nothing was sent to server (maybe also UNIX paths here?!)

Strange on 3) is that CTCP requests from other IRC users are answered...

As it says on the download page ot doesn't work under Windows - windows does not support Unix domain sockets.

It might work on Cygwin but this isn't ideal and i don't recommend it at all.

I am using client.c and since I updated to 0.5.8 messages from some users (~10%) is not recieved by the server. They seem to be lost in transfer. The only reason I can think of is the updates made to avoid the DOS bug found in 0.5.7.

I haven't been able to reproduce this error on any of my machines but I will keep trying, and ask the users with problems to try a version with client-perl instead.

Will keep this thread updated. Hopefully there is a problem with my server and not 0.5.8.

I managed to set up cgi irc on my linux box (running linux 2.4.17 on a 266MHz PPC) and all is working well when using client-perl.cgi ! But when i use the c based client (gcc -o client.cgi client.c) compiled with gcc 3.4.4, i got a problem : main windows connects to server and open channel, but a windows opens up with this adress : ¤http://192.168.1.4/cgiirc/irc.cgi?nick=rootaaa&interface=mozilla&R=o0f7say41aqb&item=fwindowlist&style=default (192.168.1.4 is my server ip) and it gives a "500 - Internal Server Error". Each time i try to send a text or i click "close", "options" or "help", i got a new windows with 500 - Internal error an the action is not done :(

What i found : - if i enter the address without '&style=default' at the end of the line, i got a page with action icons. - client.cgi & client-perl.cgi do not give the same output : [root@KURO-BOX:/www/cgiirc]$\ ./client.cgi Content-type: text/html

[root@KURO-BOX:/www/cgiirc]$\ ./client-perl.cgi Content-type: text/html

if i connect to several channels in irc.ogamenet.net it causes an error. A channel that greater than 20 people is a little problem for cgiirc. all inputs and receives aren't show effects. the first 10 seconds its work nice, after 10 sec. it doesn't work.

i have succsessfully tried connecting a bnc. but thats the same problem. short time after connect i cant send/receive messages.

in small channels are no problems.

81 event new 2005 Dec anonymous web 2005 Dec dgl 1 1 0.5.7 [IE] nph-irc.cgi iframe returns "complete" to early edit
IE Timeout

I've been running previous versions for years on ¤http://chat.snyggast.se but I've gotten myself into trouble with 0.5.7,

<iframe src="$config->{script_nph}?$string" id="iframe" width="1" height="1" style="display:none;" onreadystatechange="if(this.readyState=='complete')disconnected()"></iframe>

  • It doesn't seem to be CGI:IRC failing, and if it is it isn't giving any error output. And I see no connection between the cases (i.e. they doen't "crash" on a specific line or text)

Returns complete in the middle of the session, very early (~1min)

This affects only IE and only ~10-20% of the clients, with no connection what so ever. It's russian roulete...

I have tried everything I can think of but I can't seem to get IE to not time out, and since it happens to only 20% it is hard to test.

I tried lowering keepalive to 11 instead of 15, with some results, but I don't think that is the main problem.

I also tried adding JS call instead of <!-- Nothing comment --> in an attempt to force it to keep it alive, but with little or no progress.

I'm stuck here and I aint making any real progress either...

I think it is a timeout problem due to:

  1. ~1min is IE timeout by default
  2. It disconnects only IE users (not FF) so it doesn't seem to be CGI:IRC that crashes on something.

CGI:IRC quits with default quitmessage since do_quit is called

I was curious, would it be possible to make so that when it returns "complete" (unless CGI:IRC actually quits) it refreshes the iframe with a restart parameter so nph-irc starts streaming from the point it was, the same socket and all?

And yet again, thank you for a great client.

Regards,

Niklas Bivald

I just can't get any order in this... I can't even se the system of the disconnects. I've spend hours just trying to figure it out, but I am not getting any closer.

This is what I've come up with so far:

  • There is no (to be seen) logic in which users that gets disconnects, a user which has been d/c 10 times in a row might find it working flawlessly on the 11th..

  • It seems to have something todo with IE, firefox works in 99% of the time.

  • I can reproduce it on IE ~10-15% of my connects..

  • nph-irc.cgi does not die, the loop continues, I can both whois and CTCP the client.

So basically the http stream ends (or ie thinks it it finished to early, or it is finished to early) but nph-irc.cgi continues

This suggests that there is something wrong with the stream, or that something is just really messed up. I just can't understand how this can happen to both servers are the same time.

They are running perl 5.8 and apache 2.0.51 / Apache/2.0.55

Both have been running cgiirc 0.4 for years..

Anyone else having the same problems with 0.5.7?

Typo, the servers have been running 0.5.3

I will change apache on all server, perhaps 0.5.7 is incompatible with .5.5 and/or .5.1... I will keep this thread update if this solves or not solves the issue

Hmm, problem solved. Wierd history really. Evidently the servers crashed due to a power failure this thursday, this somehow messed up the apache installed. After 4 tries of apache versions I found one working: 2.2

Hi guys, I experience problems on re-connects, our pages host the chat in a i-frame and can be changed quickly, this means the chat loads / unloads frequently.

What happends is after the 3 or 4 load / unload I get a disconnect, the msg = "irc close" from the irc_close() function in nph-irc.cgi. I managed to narrow it down and it looks like the connect is delayed or to fast what causes the "sysread" in the main_loop to return empty.

Furthermore, the biggest problem is it takes a bout 60 seconds to cool down before you can asteblish a new connect to the irc server.

I thought at first it had to do with throtteling or something else on the server side, but I compaired it in later sessions with an other irc client and the server in debug mode and this does not look like to be the case.

We run a site where you can see webcam girls and we had already had several complaints about it. It took me some time to reproduce the errors but i finially managed a way to reproduce them easely.

Help is really appreciated here because it is of great importance to us. Please don't hasitate to contact me.

Thanx in advance, kc

when i click ok in the error message, everthink is loaded fine and i can read what everybody is writing. as soon as i want to write somethink in the bottom frame, this frame is filled with the first cgi:irc page (with user, server, channel) and a different error message in the internet explorer comes up: Line: 476 Char: 4 Error: Invalid procedure call or argument Code: 0 URL: ¤http://IP/cgi-bin/cgiirc/irc.cgi?serv=myServerIP&nick=CGIIRC756&interface=ie&chan=%23myChan&R=6rxml32zv&item=fwindowlist&style=default

i relay dont know what to do. in the file system the cgiirc files and the cgi-bin directery has "777" and i have reinstalled it twice allready.

can you please help me find a solution for this problem?

While using the web based chat client at ¤http://www.polarhome.com/cgi-bin/chat/irc.cgi, I noticed that joining a channel with a '+' in the name would fail to be able to speak in them. For example, I joined #25+Flirts, and while it joined fine, displays people talking, etc, any attempts to send text to the channel got sent instead to " #25 Flirts", and resulted in a ircd error " #25 : No such nick/channel".

It would appear that the javascript portion of the web page is failing to properly escape/encode the '+' character, and only in channel names. Sending a '+' in the text works fine. So far, I've been able to work around the problem by using the "interface=nonjs" CGI parameter, but the nonjs interface is kinna clunky to work with ;-)

Can't use swedish charset in channels when using CGI:IRC, they get converted to some weird stuff. It seems to work OK in CGI:IRC 0.5.4 which we used earlier. I've updated perl and the Encode module, but the result is still there. I even set the charset in cgiirc.config, without any result. :/

{quote: Example: Client joins channel #Malmv (this shows in the "Status" window) *** WebChat215 [www@FQ-EA782F1.skbbip.com] has joined #malmC&#131;B&#131;C&#130;B6 *** @WebChat215 *** Channel created on Thu Apr 14 23:50:38 2005

Besides "Status", I've got a bar called "#malmC&#131;B&#131;C&#130;B6". }

This results in channels rendered useless with CGI:IRC.

This does not seem to be a problem with file permissions for these image files. I used Chmod to give the same permissions as for the smiley gif files, which display correctly.

To look at the relevant part of my website, log in here : ¤http://www.sondergaard.f2s.com/bot/cgiirc/irc.cgi

This may just be an installation issue of some kind, perhaps I need to put these images in a different folder. If so, please tell me how to fix this problem.

What browser are you using?

Probably the browser detection went wrong somewhere.. If you go to irc.cgi?interface=nonjs do you get the same interface as the cgiirc.js login method gives?

That is odd, removing the -T switch from the top of nph-irc.cgi should fix it, but it looks like some odd thing in Perl's utf8 support..

I can't quite see why it happens, but it appears to be a bug in Perl. There's a bug report in the Perl RT that hasn't had a response yet: ¤http://rt.perl.org/rt3/Ticket/Display.html?id=33755 (guest/guest). Removing the taint switch is the easiest workaround though.

Thanks for the speedy reply.

I've loaded and used teststream.cgi. The screen remains blank until the entirety of it is loaded, with Test One passing and the rest failing. Here is a hyperlink.

¤http://www.teamgsquared.com/cgi-bin/teststream.cgi

I've tried this on two machines on two separate 'net connections and yielded the same results. Also, I've used the "Demo" successfully, so it isn't a problem with my machine(s) or connection interfering with the program, it seems. I have also tried renaming nph-irc.cgi to main.cgi and editing the config accordingly to no avail. Thanks again for your speedy reply.

Hello, Are you sure you disabled mod_gzip properly? Putting this in a .htaccess in the cgiirc/ folder works for me:

  DirectoryIndex irc.cgi
  SecFilterEngine Off
  mod_gzip_item_exclude file nph-.*\.cgi$

This is, of course, if you haven't renamed your nph-irc.cgi file to something else.

11 new new 2005 Feb anonymous   2005 Feb dgl 5 3 nick tracking for queries edit
right now, if having a query with some person and he changes nickname, even if he's on the same channel as i am, cgi:irc doesn't realize this so i suddenly get "no such nick" errors, and need to open up a new query. it's a bit annoying, it would be a nice feature addition. every irc client has this :)

9 event new 2005 Feb anonymous   2005 Feb dgl 5 5 undernet ircd strict username checking / ip encoding edit
the hexadecimal encoded view of the IP address (depending on the encode_ip setting) will make it impossible for certain IPs to connect to an unreal ircd if you have the encoding ip enabled and the IP is used in the username. ircu only allows a single group of digits.
2005-Feb-03 19:05:45 by dgl:
Yes, no other standard sort of IP encoding will fit in the 9 characters allowed in a username, it's not that difficult to disable the feature. (BTW: don't confuse Unreal and ircu, they are different).

2005-Jul-04 00:29:25 by anonymous:
Problematic Username on IRCU (Undernet, QuakeNet)

IRCU has very specific requirements for the username portion of the hostmask.

This is a quote from the s_user module:

    /*
     * Summary of rules now implemented in this patch: Ensor 11-94
     * In a mixed-case name, if first char is upper, one more upper may
     * appear anywhere. (A mixed-case name *must* have an upper first
     * char, and may have one other upper.)
     * A third upper may appear if all 3 appear at the beginning of the
     * name, separated only by "others" (-/_/.).
     * A single group of digits is allowed anywhere.
     * Two groups of digits are allowed if at least one of the groups is
     * at the beginning or the end.
     * Only one '-', '_', or '.' is allowed (or two, if not consecutive).
     * But not as the first or last char.
     * No other special characters are allowed.
     * Name must contain at least one letter.
     */

The problem is that the hex encoded IP that CGI:IRC can use as the username doesn't match this pattern.

A simple fix would be to use a shifted encoding scheme, eliminating all numbers, for example with

     y/0-9/q-z/

in the nph-irc / encode_ip function.

I haven't been able to track down where the font setting for the main window in cgiirc is. I can change all the colors just fine using the /format/ files (default in my case). Is font support for the main window simply missing?
The font tag was missing entirely in the style-default.css file. When I added the following, it worked:

  /* main body settings, fonts, sizes, and colors */
  .main-body {
     word-wrap: break-word;
     scrollbar-face-color: #e8e8e8;
     scrollbar-shadow-color: #777;
     scrollbar-highlight-color: #777;
     scrollbar-3dlight-color: #fff;
     scrollbar-darkshadow-color: #ccc;
     scrollbar-track-color: #e8e8e8;
     scrollbar-arrow-color: #777;
     font-family: MS Sans Serif,arial,verdana,helvetica,sans serif,sans;
     font-size: 12px;
  }

There is a interface font setting (see cgiirc.config.full) which will set the font, although not the size.

3 new new 2005 Jan dgl web 2005 Jan dgl 5 4 Allow entry of arbitrary text on login form as well as select boxes. edit
Hello,

the patch attached implements the basic idea of Feature request 967285. It allows self-typed values also in the case that a list is given in the default_thing (except for the Format field, where this doesn't make sense). It works with and without javascript.

As mentioned in Feature request 967285, a more generic approch would define some allow_self_thing option. Thus, this patch is meant as basic idea, not as a final thing.

regards, Mario

2005-Jan-06 13:07:05 by dgl:
I've combined Mario's patches from sourceforge and one sent privately into the one patch that is attached.

I'm not too keen on the UI of displaying a select box and a text input field, I have an (old) patch which did it all in JavaScript which combined with the select+input approach would work nicely with and without JavaScript, I'll see if I can combine them.

2 new new 2005 Jan dgl web 2005 Jan dgl 3 3 Use POST rather than GET for sensitive data edit
(From sourceforge ticket 1076799)

All the connection details are passed though in the QUERY_STRING variable. Unfortunatly this gets logged in the apache logs.

This patch modifies the two places where the details (including the server connect password) are passed in 'plain-text' as part of the query string. The replacement is a form with hidden fields, that are POST'ed to the destination iframe.

This ensures that the apache logs do not contain the Nick or Password of the user.
